John Singer Sargent (1856 – 1925), a gifted portraitist, displayed his ability to capture a subject’s personality and individuality in his famous painting “Madame X.” Originally painted with one strap provocatively slipping off her shoulder, “Madame X” generated such scandal that Sargent repainted it to look less suggestive. Digressing from his era’s artistic trends, Sargent established his own style of realism that interpreted the masters in a contemporary style.
